To become an au pair, you must be able to answer “yes” to the following questions:

  • Are you between the ages of 18 and 26 years old?

  • Do you love children and have at least 200 hours of experience caring for them?

  • Have you completed (or are you about to complete) secondary school or equivalent?

  • Do you have a driver's license or can you obtain one during the application process?

  • Is your past free of any criminal activity?

  • Are you in good health?

  • Are you ready to commit to at least 12 months abroad?

If you answered “yes” to all of the above, then you’re eligible to become an au pair!

  • Here are some common responsibilities of an au pair:

  • Prepare meals and snacks for the children

  • Help the children get dressed and ready for the day

  • Help get the kids to school and other activities

  • Engage the children in fun games and activities

  • Wash and fold laundry for the children

  • Help the kids with their homework

  • Help ensure that the kids' rooms stay clean

  • Help the children get ready for bed

Keep in mind you will not be expected to perform tasks that are unrelated to children or include heavy manual labor such as housecleaning, yard maintenance or other types of chores.

It’s important to note that our program has a set of rules to help protect your rights as an au pair. These limits are enforced by law through the U.S. Department of State.

According to program regulations, au pairs are entitled to the following benefits:

  • Au pairs must be on duty no more than 45 hours per week, and no more than 10 hours per day.

  • Au pairs must receive 1.5 consecutive days off per week and one full weekend per month.

  • During their program year, au pairs must be given 2 weeks of paid, off-duty holiday.

Here is what is included in your programme participation:

  • You don’t need to pay extra for airfare! Our team of travel specialists will arrange airfare from your home country to your host family’s gateway—and back home at the end of your year*.

  • Your host family will provide room and meals as well as a minimum weekly stipend of $195.75 – this is simply pocket money for you!

  • As an au pair, you will take classes of your choice at a local university or college—your host family will contribute up to $500 per year towards your studies.

  • You are entitled to 2 weeks of paid holiday per year—plus your J-1 visa allows you a bonus travel month at the end of your term to travel the USA!

  • Comprehensive insurance coverage—including sports! 

  • As a Cultural Care au pair, you’ll be insured with premium coverage during your au pair year as well as durin g your 13th travel month.**
